A Visit to Alabama Part One

An amazing thing happened this year. After Nanny and I had many discussions about how her and Granddad cannot travel anymore, the idea came up to have us travel to see her. I thought it was a great idea because I hadn't been there since I was 16 when Nanny married Eric and Kevin and Trace had never been there. After much planning and discussing, we decided we'd head out there just before school started for Trace and after Granddad's 95th birthday. When my mother found out about our plans, she and my Dad planned to tag along. They stayed with Nanny and Granddad and we stayed at a nearby Marriott in Huntsville.

Nanny's house was not as I remembered it, but considering I hadn't been there in 24 years, I wasn't too surprised. Nanny and Grampy (Burt Dempsey) lived in a house that I spent a lot more time in, so I had more memories of that home. We had been there as a family a total of only 3 times. When Grampy got sick, at his funeral and when Nanny married Eric Willey (Granddad) in 1992 we stayed in that house since she hadn't sold it yet. We went to drive by that old house while we were in Alabama and it sure had changed! Anyway, the house we went to this time was Eric's and his wife's while their children were growing up and when they got married, Nanny moved in. (It's a one-level rambler and a little larger, so it just made sense) I did notice that because they married later in life, they have nearly two of everything! They've done a good job of fitting all the furniture in, but you can definitely tell there is almost two of everything. My mom made a point while we were there to identify the items that were Nanny's and which items were not, since this trip may be the last time she'll be there before Granddad passes and Nanny would come to live with her in Utah.
